Sometimes.....a very simple shape comes out on to my paper. From that simple, clean shape, multiple designs emerge and it is a beautiful evolution. The first shape you see below was something I did within a matter of seconds - a very raw sketch. It was a shape that I was going to use with additional elements in another design. However, as soon as it was on paper I knew it was special and I knew it would be enough to stand out on it's own. Below is the evolution of what happ
NEVER EVER EVER. If you would have asked me a week ago if I would be designing abstract would I have EVER said yes. NEVER. On Monday, something made me try it.....I sat down to draw and out came shapes that were matching up together like a puzzle, but the shapes themselves had no similarities. I posted my first design earlier this week (which I have already sold by the way!), and am posting it again below along with two more that I did later in the week. So, you can see
More like outside of my comfort zone! I do lots and lots of florals, and I love doing them, they come very naturally. I enjoy working in a tossed/free flowing way. Sometimes you have to change it up a bit though, give yourself a bit of a challenge as an artist in order to grow. I have been looking at a lot of geometirc and abstract designs lately, and trend reports are teeming with them! I've been pinning my little heart out on Pinterest, here is my GEOMETRIC design board.
Custom orders always take me places I never would have gone before, and this order did just that! I never would have chosen to draw dandelion fluff if it weren't requested by this client reworking their business logo. The logo reveal will be in a follow-up blog post of course! Anyway, I had the best time playing with dandelions today and wanted to share my designs with you. But again, you will have to wait and see which one she ultimately chose for the new logo! First.....A
My mind was spinning all day today (in an AWESOME way). All because of one.single.flower. and one.single.leaf. that I drew a couple of days ago. I started playing around with the flower this morning and out popped two designs. My kids were home from school for a snow day so I couldn't get back to it until later this afternoon; but my mind was still spinning with ideas even when we were at Target looking at Lego sets! I finally had some down time this afternoon from mommyhood
I am a sucker for the preppy "look". What is that look? When I sat down to actually write my thoughts about it I came up with rugby stripes, argyle, clean lines, crisp jewel tone colors as well as pastels, nautical themes, boat shoes, jackets, bow ties, pearl necklaces, etc. Since I really like the look I decided to look through my designs to see if any of them fit the bill without having specifically done anything "preppy" on purpose. I can definitely see this sand dollar
I have been finding mysef drawn to foliage, leaves, petals, stalks and stems lately. It may be due to the fact that we are in the thick of winter in Northern Virginia with hardly a leaf in sight! However, take a moment and do a quick computer search on leaves. You will quickly see that foliage is brimming with natural pattern. For example, take a look at the tossed design below; not only is it striking due to the natural shape of the leaf, but add to it the natural design
I have always and will always love custom orders. It is an opportunity to really push my creativity and think like someone else, the client! It is our job as freelance designers to get down on paper what that person wants you to capture on that paper. There is nothing better than hearing "that is exactly what I was looking for, that is perfect or I LOVE IT". It is beyond fulfilling! COMORTO ZONE? Not here! I bet you are thinking wait a minute, this is not a surface design?!
One shape. One simple. simple shape. A shape that takes two strokes of a pen. It is amazing what one can do with a shape like this when you just add color, change the fill, change the outline, etc. It is a beautiful thing really. GUM DROP....ah, one of my favorite sweet treats. Who knew a simple shape like this in a repeat deisgn could be so striking, so eye catching. Use a bold color combo and it makes even more of a statement. I am thinking hills of mushrooms here! Lovin
There is something to be said for a guy that can rock a bow tie don't you think? I mean not everyone can pull one off! Bow ties have made a definite come back in recent times....now we do live on the East Coast, and we have lived in North Carolina for a good amount of time recently; maybe I'm wrong here, but I think bow ties are a little more prevalent on this side of the United States? Kind of that southern preppy, country club look ? Any color, any pattern is IN. LOVE IT
