I am a sucker for the preppy "look". What is that look? When I sat down to actually write my thoughts about it I came up with rugby stripes, argyle, clean lines, crisp jewel tone colors as well as pastels, nautical themes, boat shoes, jackets, bow ties, pearl necklaces, etc. Since I really like the look I decided to look through my designs to see if any of them fit the bill without having specifically done anything "preppy" on purpose.
I can definitely see this sand dollar print being worn by a lovely lady going sailing for the afternoon can't you?
Well of course I had to see what Wikipedia had to say about it! Here are some snippets:
Preppy fashion has its roots in the Ivy League style of dress, which started around 1912 and became more established in the late 1950s. Tthe quintessential Ivy League style, stemming from the collegiate traditions of Ivy League schools.
Some typical preppy styles also reflect traditional upper class New England leisure activities, such as polo, sailing, hunting, fencing, crew rowing, lacrosse, golf, rugby, and swimming. This association with New England outdoor activities can be seen in preppy fashion, through stripes and colors, equestrian clothing, plaid shirts, field jackets, and nautical-themed accessories.
The classic ensembles often seen worn by professional women in East Coast cities and elsewhere include tailored skirt suits, low heels, wrap dresses, shift dresses, silk or cotton blouses, and jewelry with a refined style. Such clothing often includes elements drawn from typical preppy style, such as nautical stripes, pastel colours, or equestrian details. Examples of preppy attire include argyle sweaters, crewneck sweaters, grosgrain or woven leather belts, chinos, madras, button down Oxford cloth shirts, seersucker cotton suiting, pearl necklaces and earrings, gold bangle or large chain bracelets, penny loafers, and boat shoes.
I LOVE IT ALLLLLL! Pretty sure I would have been considered in the "preppy" group way back in high school!
I die for the quintessential rugby stripe, always have!
It is that bit of stripe and those COLORS that scream preppy in this recent design I did!
And always and forever the nice clean lines of a good plaid! Preppy to the max :)
